The gambling spectrum

On the gambling spectrum, most people have no gambling problems. They may gamble for:

  • entertainment
  • as a hobby
  • as a social activity
  • to enjoy pleasant surroundings.

In the mid-range of the spectrum, some people have a moderate gambling problem. Their gambling may have elements of:

  • guilt
  • chasing losses
  • family arguments about gambling
  • concealment of gambling
  • depression
  • high expenditure.

At the extreme end of the gambling spectrum, there are a few people with severe gambling problems. They may be living with:

  • depression
  • serious suicidal thoughts
  • divorce
  • debt and poverty
  • criminal behaviour.
